5 Tips on How to get Glowing, Healthy Skin this Winter

Vata season is here, which means one thing: cold, dry and windy. We may experience dry and dull skin, brittle hair and stress (especially during the holidays). This is mostly caused by loss of water in the body and excess mucous; an imbalance in the body and mind. To have glowing skin this season we need to treat these conditions both externally and internally.

1. Put away the lettuce

You can finally remove the salads, raw vegetables, green juice, rice cakes, and raw kale from your diet as they are extremely drying foods. Replace them with warm, cooked and oily. Soups, vegetable stews, steamed vegetables, curries and hearty grains are excellent choices- as they have higher water content and increase internal moisture. Avocadoes, pumpkins, beets, asparagus, bananas, mangoes are great choices as well as quinoa, oats and basmati rice. Seeds are loaded with healthy fats, which are nourishing for the skin; Load up on flax seeds, sesame seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, almonds, and pumpkin seeds.

2. Oil yourself up

The practice of massage, called Abhyanga in Sanskrit, is a very important part of daily activity for creating balance. Massage not only moisturizes the skin but also nourishes all the tissues in the body, mind and senses. It helps in increasing circulation, allowing the detoxification of the skin and of course, promoting relaxation. So start by warming the oil in hot water for few minutes, then begin at the scalp, the hair and finally the body by using long repetitive strokes along the limbs and circular strokes around the joints and scalp. The best oils for this season are sesame or almond oils.

3.Face the miracle (oils)

Using plant-based oils on your face this season. They secure in the moisture, combat wrinkles and increase glow. Sesame, coconut, mustard oils are great and heavy. Contrary to popular belief, oils are great for battling acne too as typical acne treatments dry the skin, leading the skin to compensate by making more oil and sebum. Rosehip oil is one of my favorites – I call it the miracle oil- it is lighter then the others and great for oily skin. It hydrates, treats wrinkles and lightens scars. Gently massage with upward strokes on the face and neck. Castor oil is also amazing for the eye area it moisturizes and nourishes it even helps in increasing the growth of your eyelashes.

4. Uncover the mask

I live by this Ayurvedic saying: “If you can’t eat it don’t use it on your body”.

Keeping the skin moisturized and oiled is key. Giving the face a good mask is also essential in this season. Here are my favorite 2 masks for this season.

Mask 1:

½ avocado

2 tablespoon orange juice

1 teaspoon honey

Mash the avocado and mix in the orange juice and honey. Apply to face and wait for 20 minutes. Wash your face with lukewarm water.

Mask 2

2 Tablespoon chickpeas

1-1 ½ Tablespoon Yoghurt

2 teaspoon lemon juice

Mix all the ingredients together until you have a soft paste. Apply to face and wait for 20 minutes. Wash your face with lukewarm water

5.Hair Mask:

One of the reasons we lose hair this season is because of a dry scalp. Making a scalp and hair mask weekly is beneficial. Try this amazing mask for the hair once a week or twice a week:

1 Riped avocado

1 Tablespoon yoghurt

2 Tablespoon olive oil

Put all the ingredients in a blender and make a smooth mixture, then apply it to the scalp and your hair and wait for 15-20 minutes. Wash as usual.
