I heard of Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant, from a friend who spoke so highly about her books and how her life was transformed by Marie Kondo. I bought the book “The life-changing Magic of Tidying up” with hesitation as I thought it would be just another self help book. However, I was surprised by how well written and how useful her tips are.
The KonMari method encourages us to discard all items which don’t “spark joy” and “to thank them before discarding them”. I had so many of these items which where sitting in my cupboards for years because I always said to myself “maybe one day I will need this”. She also tells us to tidy up our belongings by category, dictating an order: first clothes, then books, then papers, then miscellaneous items, and finally sentimental items.
Here are some of the tips I found extremely useful from her book:
1) Tackle categories, not rooms.
I have always tackled my clutters room by room, but I have never thought of doing it category by category. We all have clothes hanging in different rooms, papers in different boxes, and when I piled everything together I could see the whole picture behind those categories. Really useful.
2) Keep only items that spark joy.
Kondo suggests to pick up every item, turn it over in your hands, study it and then ask yourself- how does this item make me feel? How do you feel if you will never see it again? She then specifies “take every sock, every shirt, every single book in your hands” and ask yourself “does this spark joy?”, and if it does, keep it, if not, discard it. I have to admit that in the categories of socks and pants, I had to ditch a lot of them, as too many did not spark any joy.
3) Don’t let your possessions weigh you down.
If you are like me, and hang on to things just because we paid a lot of money for them and convince ourselves by saying “someday I will wear this”, that day will almost never come says Kondo. She writes “when you come across something that you cannot part with, think carefully about its true purpose in your life. During my clean-up I found dresses that I have not worn for 10 years, books I have not read for 12 years. Wow! This hit me right in the stomach, I was holding those item because of the memories, the sensations they represented items, and the fear of letting go of that, not the joy nor the usefulness of them.
I love this quote in particular: “Keep only those things that speak to your heart. Then take the plunge and discard all the rest. By doing this, you can reset your life and embark on a new lifestyle.”
5) Vertical Folding.
This stage really saved me space. I got old shoe boxes from the garage and folded the t-shirts vertically, and that was really great as I could see all of them together and could take one out without having to mess up the whole pile.
6)Fall in love with your cupboard:
After clearing up the clutter and folding all items, there is a joy in looking at the cupboard, there is an ease in finding items, and there is a feeling of joy which arises. This was a life changer as I now really enjoy opening my cupboard and reaching for things I need with ease. What a joy!!!
